Description
Country house accommodation with award winning breakfasts and delicious dinners off the beaten track in Mortimer Country on north Herefordshire/south Shropshire borders where England meets Wales just ten miles west of Ludlow...
Henry and Carolyn Chesshire at Lower Buckton Country House offer delightful accommodation with award winning breakfasts and delicious dinners off the beaten track in a secluded hamlet in Mortimer Country on the Herefordshire/Shropshire borders where England meets Wales.
Henry and Carolyn are very generous and hospitable hosts, love to entertain and who excel in offering Bed and Breakfast, House Parties and Private Dining. Carolyn’s the cook and presides over her AGA and Henry’s the butler and presides over his cellar!
Bed and Breakfast with a difference in this lovely old house which has oodles of art and antiques, curios and collections, family portraits and paintings. A perfect setting for house parties, private dinner parties, hen parties, stag parties, reunions, receptions and celebrations for any occasion. The food is as tempting as the location where ‘eat the view’ takes on a whole new meaning.
A tranquil spot in a rural idyll
From the house are uninterrupted views for miles of farmland, woodland, forests and beyond the horses’ paddocks are glimpses of the River Teme meandering its way to Ludlow just ten miles downstream. The garden leads to an ancient mill-stream; the adjacent old mill is complete with wheel. A foot-bridge leads over to the croquet court, kitchen garden and the fields beyond………there are circular walks along the riverside or through farmland, parkland, woodland and moorland. You can even Bring Your Own Horse on Holiday – there’re plenty of stabling and grazing.
The Bedrooms are bright and airy. Cosy beds have featherdown quilts and pillows, cool, crisp linen/cotton covers, topped with vintage Welsh blankets or antique satin throws. There’s the where-with-all to make proper tea and coffee (no tea-bags and ‘instants’) – a fridge with fresh milk and Radnor Hills Water, fresh fruit, homemade biscuits, garden flowers, glossy magazines, interesting books, local information, original work by a local artist and comfortable chairs or sofa on which to sit and read, listen to CDs or watch a DVD from the house collections. Bathrooms have soft towels, bathrobes, slippers, bubbles and handmade soaps plus a basket of those essentials you may have left at home………..
The Drawing Room is always open to guests – with comfortable sofas and chairs, piles of reference books, maps and board games, a welcoming wood-burning stove and sherry decanter all over-seen from the walls by Henry’s ancestors!
The Dining Room has a huge table (made by The Legless Table Company) for proper country breakfasts and extremely convivial dinner parties. Lots of fine china, crystal, silver, linen, flickering candles in silver candelabra and a blazing log fire in the grate - the perfect ambiance for Carolyn’s delicious food and you can even bring your own wines too!
Food plays a big part at Lower Buckton which specialises in year-round local, seasonal produce. The extremely productive Kitchen Garden supplies the Kitchen with vegetables, fruit and salad throughout the year. Rare-breed Berkshire pigs free-range with old English bantams in the farm-yard. Lamb, mutton and beef come from near-neighbouring farms and game in season from neighbouring country estates – wild venison - Fallow or Roe, pheasant, wild duck and sometimes elusive grouse off The Beacon, a wild area of Wales just west of Knighton. Real Food at its best - home-grown/reared/produced or locally sought, bought and caught – Lower Buckton is a multi-national supermarket-free zone. Henry and Carolyn, members of Slow Food UK, prefer to patronise small, local independent producers and suppliers – artisanal cheese-makers, bakers, brewers and smokers. Leintwardine village has its own butcher/slaughterhouse, daily bread deliveries from an artisan baker and local dairy. The area produces delicious wines and local beers: make time to visit the regular Farmers’ Markets. Local food means fewer food miles!

What will you do? We welcome walkers and cyclists and will dry outdoor clothes and muddy boots, lock-up bikes and organise cycle hire – touring, all terrain or mountain – Hopton Woods, five miles up the lane, has National standard race-tracks and there are loads of quiet lanes, tracks and trails in 1000s acres of Forestry Commission. All wonderful for walking and hiking too – we’ve loads of maps. The Herefordshire Trail, passing our door, goes on to link with the Mortimer Trail. A most dramatic walking path is Offas Dyke which is about seven miles west at Knighton – stunning views, stunning scenery – go there! There are a famous clay pigeon shooting-ground, team-building outdoor activity centre, equestrian centres, golfing and fishing all in the most glorious settings, just ask for details. Exhausted? Finish the day at a local spa centre with pool, sauna and steam………..
For the less energetic we’ve more castles, churches, ancient settlements, historic houses and pretty gardens than you can shake a stick at. Antiques and book shops, specialist food and wine shops, interiors and exteriors, cathedral towns and mediaeval villages, horse racing and agricultural shows, concerts and plays, food festivals and beer festivals – the list is endless, something for everyone.
But why not simply chill out at Lower Buckton with a glass of wine by the stream listening to the birds? With virtually no ‘light pollution’ the clear night skies show the stars and galaxies so well – watch the shooting stars
Lower Buckton specialises in Bring Your Own Horse Holidays and has plenty of stabling, grazing and parking. The riding is from the yard in all directions down quiet lanes, farm tracks and bridle-paths – you can ride three counties and two countries in a day, hardly see another soul or vehicle and – round the block or exploring all day, you and your horse will have the holiday to remember – trot over soon…………..
Cooking Good Cookery Courses and Food Safaris
Carolyn runs cookery courses which specialise in preparing and cooking local, seasonal food from the area. Food safaris are arranged for groups to visit specialist growers and producers – a day out with Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Wales on a plate – see website for more details.
